Floods Impact Selangor Due to Heavy Rainfall

Posted on: Apr 28, 2025 | Author: Thiba Sri
  • Heavy rainfall affected Peninsular Malaysia, in particular the western state of Selangor over the past week, causing floods that have resulted in population evacuations and damage.
  • The ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet) reports, as of 28 April, a total of more than 1,420 evacuated people, of which 608 evacuated people are in one evacuation centre in Kuala Selangor town, and 552 evacuated people are in four evacuation centres across the Petaling district, Selangor state.
  • Over the next 48 hours, more heavy rainfall is still forecast over the whole of Peninsular Malaysia.
Floods Impact Selangor Due to Heavy Rainfall

In late April 2025, Selangor experienced significant flash floods due to continuous heavy rainfall, particularly affecting areas like Klang, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, and Sungai Buloh. In Shah Alam's Taman Sri Muda, floodwaters reached up to 1.2 meters, impacting numerous homes and necessitating evacuations. Similarly, in Klang's Taman Sri Jaya, several houses were inundated, leading to the displacement of residents. The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department reported that in Sungai Buloh, approximately 80 homes in Kampung Paya Jaras Hilir were submerged under three feet of water. In Petaling Jaya, a woman in her 50s was rescued after floodwaters rose to five feet along Jalan PJU 1A/46.

In response, the Selangor state government initiated urgent flood mitigation efforts. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari directed immediate action to address the recurring flood issues, emphasizing the need for improved drainage systems and infrastructure upgrades to prevent future incidents.

These events are part of the broader 2024–2025 Southeast Asia floods, which have affected multiple countries in the region, leading to widespread displacement and highlighting the need for enhanced disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
